Mercury
Mercury is a dense, silvery d-block metal that is liquid at ordinary room temperatures. It occurs mainly in cinnabar, a red mercury sulfide ore, which is heated to release mercury vapor that is then condensed. Mercury was once widely used in thermometers and other instruments, but its toxicity has led to restrictions on many uses. Its symbol, Hg, comes from hydrargyrum, meaning “water-silver.”
