Radium
Radium is a silvery-white, highly radioactive metal in the alkaline earth family. It occurs naturally in tiny amounts in uranium ores, where it forms as uranium decays. Discovered by Marie and Pierre Curie, radium was once used in luminous paints, but its radioactivity makes it hazardous; today, its applications are limited, including specialized uses in nuclear medicine.
